Sakana Sushi & Grill
Rating:

The first time I tried sushi was at Sakana Sushi & Grill nearly two years ago, and just recently I went back for another visit. I am obviously not a sushi expert, but I am a seafood-lover. My friend, whose culinary taste and experience I truly respect, ordered everything for us. There were some very appealing daily specials, but we bypassed them as she wanted me to have a true sushi experience. We started with some tuna hand rolls (left), which were very tasty. They were so soft, everything just blended perfectly in my mouth. Some soy sauce and just a little wasabi made the rolls a great start to our meal.
Next, we had the salmon and salmon roe (below). This was my first time having caviar. I don’t know why some people don’t like the little eggs, they are so full of flavor. I shouldn’t fail to mention the simple but beautiful presentation of the dishes; it was like having our own mini-art show at our table.

The dishes kept coming. There were the crab rolls with salmon and avocado (below-left), which was the perfect combination of flavors. Then the ahi tuna (below-right), mmm so good. It had a nice, chewy texture and tasted very fresh. It reminded me of those days in Kauai…oh well, back to Phoenix now.

The last dish was fresh water eel (below), which is my favorite. This was the only thing we had that was cooked. The soy-based but sweet sauce that covers it just made it the perfect ending.

Overall, everything was really good (especially the company). I am afraid I don’t have the prices for each of the dishes as it was my birthday and it was my friend’s treat (she’s so sweet). Although we had a very nice experience at Sakana Sushi & Grill, my friend wants to take me out someday to what she says is the best sushi place in town. I’ll let you know all about it. I am already dreaming about eating Sushi again!
Note: other Sakana locations can be found in Mesa, Scottsdale, and Glendale (see website for details).
